Arianna Huffington & The Plight Of The Poor
Thursday, March 11th, 2010Why is Arianna Huffington lecturing us on the plight of the poor? Here is what she says:
Ever since Roseanne went off the air, network TV has not been the most welcoming place when it comes to telling the stories of working class Americans. But now, week in and week out, millions can see what downsizing and Wall Street’s demands for ever-greater productivity and earning margins did to the lives of so many Americans, even before the economic crisis.
The chasm between America’s haves and have-nots has reached Grand Canyon-esque proportions. Thirty years ago top executives at S&P 500 companies made an average of 30 times what their workers did — now they make 300 times what their workers make.
First, I don’t want to hear Arianna Huffington blabbing about the plight of the poor. Period. What does she know about any of it? Her blog post smacks of condescension. From high above, in her lofty perch, Ms. Huffington will deign to speak for America’s poor folk.
Second, what libs always forget is how the cost of living, and living well, has declined over the same time. Can you say Wal-Mart? Because of the economies of scale, people actually live better, on less, than they did a generation ago. So this kvetching about losing the middle class rings hollow. Literally. When I don’t see “poor” people with iPhones, I’ll be far more concerned.
What used to be considered a need and what’s a “need” these days are as vastly different as the income disparities she cites. Culturally, we are indulged with all sorts of needless, ultimately worthless, gadgets and gizmos. I challenge Arianna to find a poor person who doesn’t have a Wii or extensive video game collection.
Finally, if Arianna wants to make life better for poor people, she should encourage her progressive buddies to stop all the welfare–corporate, banking, and individual–that sucks money out of the private sector who could be hiring these poor people.
The biggest problem facing Americans today is finding a J-O-B. The second biggest is keeping a job. A job keeps people from getting poor. I know, that’s just crazy talk.
So, if Ms. Huffington really cares about the poor, how about this? Kill the health care reform bill, kill card check, kill cap-n-trade because every single one of these bills kills jobs and what this economy needs right now is jobs.
Do many working Americans have dirty jobs? Yup. The focus need not be on work conditions, although that’s a nice thing too, but on having a job period. It should also be about breaking the teacher’s unions so that kids actually learn something so they can be in an educated work force, period. But don’t want to tick off teachers or unions or any of the other groups leftists pander to.
Arianna Huffington is really kinda unbelievable. She tries to foment class warfare from her gilded ivory tower and backs legislation that guarantees the poor stay poor. It’s so great being a liberal and saying nice things and feeling good about oneself while achieving horrible ends.
Louise Slaughter: Slaughtering The Will Of The People
Thursday, March 11th, 2010Glenn Reynolds wrote of the consent of the governed the other day; that was before Louise Slaughter’s evil genius plan to get health care passed.
It’s government gone wild! Steve Schippert of Threats Watch fumes:
House Rules Chairwoman Louise Slaughter says she is “prepping to help usher the healthcare overhaul through the House and potentially avoid a direct vote on the Senate overhaul bill.” She continued, explaining how House passage of a separate bill containing “changes” to the Senate version would lead House leadership to “deem” the actual Senate HealthCare Bill passed – without a direct vote.
This is not simply tyrannical in nature, it is absolute political cowardice.
Whether any American likes or dislikes any bill – any bill – none of us are governed under a Constitution nor any Congress within a Constitution that affords for an individual in an elected body to “deem” anything. We elected you, for better or worse, to vote on legislation, whether we like the specific outcome or not. There is a process within both the letter and spirit of the Constitution.
The notion of anyone “deeming” anything “passed” without going through the actual voting process of real passage is the kind of governance seen in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq or Bashar Assad’s Syria or Castro’s Cuba.
Few things in this lifetime have inspired such furious rage as this brazen attempt to undermine the legislative process as set forth within the Constitution of the United States.
William Jacobson is grateful for Scott Brown because we can still fight. And that’s true. I’ve felt that this bill will pass.
And I still believe this bill will pass.
What the Democrats are having to do, though, to get this beast passed? The Dems who will lose their jobs are currently being bought off, one at a time. There are lobbying jobs and plum posts being given as we speak.
The only way it won’t pass is if some Democrats stick to principles. See why I’m pessimistic?
If Broadband Is A Right, Then A Car Is A Right
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010Why do leftists insist on making everything a right? Why can’t they let the market do its thing?
Here’s the deal: When people say that broadband is a right, what they mean is that the United States should pay for the world’s internet access.
Bloggingheads TV: Well, I Think We Can Establish That Liberals Really Dislike Me, They Really, Really Dislike Me
Saturday, March 6th, 2010Thursday, I had my debut on Bloggingheads with the liberal blogger Bill Scher of Liberal Oasis. I had never met Bill before, though we had had some pleasant exchanges on Twitter.
Here’s the link to Bloggingheads.tv and our show. I was a little nervous and was short on prep time. There is no question I need better lighting in my office. Overall, though, it went okay.
The libs (which looks like the main audience on this site) did not like me talking about average Americans. That seemed to rile them more than anything–as if Beltway libs aren’t Americans. Of course the Bubble Boys and Girls in DC are Americans. I don’t think, though, they have an understanding for what makes sense to those living in the heartland. And that was my point.
While liberals like all the parts and pieces of this huge health care bill, most people are thinking about jobs. If I had a job, an unemployed worker thinks, all this health care talk would be moot. An average person also doesn’t believe that the federal government makes anything cheaper.
So while people tighten their belts, the Federal government is expanding with health care?
That’s the meta message that Americans reject and the liberals just can’t seem to get through their pointy heads. It has ceased to be about policy because the overall principle defies common sense.
Anyway, my musings on this topic were like provoking a caged bull. The Democrats are at each others throats, as Bill rightly noted, which is why they can’t come up with a cohesive message. Oh, the message has gotten through loud and clear. The American people reject it soundly.
So, the comments reflect that impotent rage. And, they just don’t like an unapologetic conservative-libertarian.
Liberals Hate Texas’ Success
Friday, January 29th, 2010From the Texas GOP. I expect more of this as Lib states fail and conservative states thrive (or at least, do better.):
AUSTIN — The Democratic left is opening up several online fronts from which they will attack the Texas record this election year. Posing as non-partisan civic watchdogs, their aim is to produce material that becomes fodder for posts on Democratic-allied blogs and, eventually, stories in the mainstream press in Texas. For instance, Texans for Public Justice, a leftwing group that receives funding from liberal interests and foundations like the Open Society Institute, this week published a baseless online report claiming that the Texas Enterprise Fund is suffering from its own “recession.” This, in spite of the fact that Texas is the nation’s leading job creator. Unlike the Obama Administration’s so called stimulus that created “jobs” in fake districts, the state of Texas holds companies to strict contracts, rewarding successful job creation, through the Texas Enterprise Fund.
“These leftwing noise factories are trying to do what the voters of Texas have repeatedly rejected over the past several years: Empower liberal Democrats by tearing down Texas’ conservative success story,” said Republican Party of Texas Communications Director Bryan Preston. “There are several of these shady groups out there – Matt Angle’s Lone Star Project, this Texans for Public Justice, wherever you turn over a rock you find one of them. They spin tales attacking the state’s successes or its leaders, in the hope of winning power for their Democrat allies by default since the Democrats in Texas have no actual ideas or record to run on. But we’re on to them and their slimy tactics won’t work.”
Texans for Public Justice receives funding from the aforementioned leftwing Tides Foundation. It also receives funding from the Open Society Institute, which is funded by the George Soros Foundation Network. TPJ is therefore a part of the larger far left Soros effort that includes leftwing Media Matters for America and the liberal think tank, Center for American Progress, both based in Washington.
Angle’s Lone Star Project, based in Washington, DC, is funded primarily by the Texas Democratic Trust, a liberal foundation funded by the Baron estate. It funds Angle as well as the Texas Democratic Party. That estate made headlines in 2008 when the Dallas Morning News reported that Dallas lawyer Fred Baron used his fortune in 2007 to help former North Carolina Senator and former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards cover up his extramarital affair with a videographer – an affair that produced a daughter, which Edwards only recently acknowledged fathering. She is two years old. Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, was suffering from cancer at the time of the affair, and continues fighting the disease to this day. Baron passed away in 2008 but his estate continues funding Democrat operations in Texas.
First Carville Recommends That Obama Blame More, Now Begala
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010What are these two wiley wascals up to? First Carville, now Begala?
The President has a four-year, no-cut contract. In the words of Andrew Marvell, he has “world enough and time.” But members of the House are on the ballot in 10 months. If his majority is to survive, he needs to do three things: attack, attack, attack.
Is it just me or does this strategy sound exactly wrong given the populaces’ mood?
And then, that makes me think that they’re setting up Hillary. Again.
John and Elizabeth Edwards Legally Split Today
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Buried today in the news of the State of the Union and the Apple iPad this:
Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who admitted last week that he fathered a child with a videographer, separated Wednesday from his wife, Elizabeth, according to a source close to her.
Edwards, 56, denied he was the infant’s father for more than a year, saying his affair with Rielle Hunter was over before she became pregnant.
The former U.S. senator from North Carolina unsuccessfully sought the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
Elizabeth Edwards’ sister, Nancy Anania, told People magazine in an article dated Wednesday that Elizabeth told her, “I’ve had it. I can’t do this. I want my life back.”
The sister told the magazine, “She’s got cancer and has young children and totally believes in marriage … but she can only do so much.”
And there’s a sex tape. Of course. And it won’t get released “unless he needs the money.”
AND, John Edwards hates “fat rednecks:”
Young also writes that Edwards, who billed himself as the modest son of a mill worker, hated making appearances at state fairs where “fat rednecks try to shove food down my face. I know I’m the people’s senator, but do I have to hang out with them?”
You wouldn’t have heard this story if it weren’t for the MSM. But they’re no biased. Nosiree…
The Last Refuge Of A Miserable Democrat: Call The Voters Stupid
Monday, January 25th, 2010Joe Klein illustrates the anger coming from the left. The Democrats are imploding. The voters are frustrated. The horizon doesn’t look better for the libs.
Who’s to blame? Not the Democrats. Never them. It’s YOUR fault, says Joe Klein in his post titled Too Dumb To Thrive:
It is very difficult to have a democracy without citizens. It is impossible to be a citizen if you don’t make an effort to understand the most basic activities of your government. It is very difficult to thrive in an increasingly competitive world if you’re a nation of dodos.
Oh, and it’s Fox News’ fault, too.
Why can’t voters just get how awesome the President, the Democrats, their policies and the cheerleaders in the press really are? Why oh why oh why?
Idiots./sarcasm off
On Whether Harry Reid & The Liberals Should Pay
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
I am so sick of the left’s double standards. Disgusted. So, I wrote my frustration:
If Harry Reid is forced to retire, do conservatives and Republicans actually end up the biggest losers?
This morning I read a quote from Ilya Somin of the Volokh Conspiracy and laughed out loud. Here’s what was said:
If the GOP wins this particular fight and Reid is forced to resign, there will be a new norm in public discourse under which no prominent person can openly say the same kinds of things as Reid without being labeled a racist.
We’ve been there for a long time — if you’re anything but a liberal Democrat. Republicans, conservatives … regular Americans can’t say what Harry Reid said without censure.
Noting that President Obama turns the jive on and off is no different than noting that Hillary Clinton does it. It’s no different than noting that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson do it. It’s no different than noting that major sports and music celebrities (white and black) do it. That is not racist. That’s a fact. Now, whether or not this verbal nuance is a good or bad thing is another argument entirely, but I don’t think anyone can honestly argue that it doesn’t happen.
If I said these things and I was a Democrat, though, I wouldn’t be presumed racist — just a little edgy and maybe somewhat insensitive. But since I’m a conservative, that last paragraph just confirms what is self-evident to someone from the left: I’m a racist — else would I be a conservative?
Never mind that there are plenty of black people who would make the same observation. Never mind that there are black conservatives who would say the same thing. The conservative blacks, though, are illegitimate. They betray their race for refusing to do things like sliding into jive in front of certain audiences. They are trying to be “too white.” They aren’t proud of their black heritage, evidently.
Of course, the whole “black enough” argument is deeply offensive and ridiculous and actually very racist. But these notions are put forth by the very leaders who insist that they are for changing the black culture to respect education, erudition, and intelligent discourse.
So while Ilya Somin is correct in decrying the constriction of speech for all people, I’m saying it’s already happened for some people. Now, I wrote those words because I have already given up. Being labeled racist bothers me less than restricting my speech. And by virtue of being conservative, I am already labeled racist.
What makes me inherently racist is my conservatism. It’s axiomatic. So screw it. The label has lost it’s sting.
Go read the whole thing.
The Examiner’s Star Parker believes the Republicans are making a big mistake, but I find her reasoning less than compelling. She says:
Perhaps worst of all, Republicans insult blacks to think that they do not see the obvious. That alleged Republican outrage about Reid’s remarks is simply a political game.
Or that blacks do not appreciate the transparent hypocrisy when a black RNC chairman, who is in his job because of his race, expresses outrage that a white Democrat expresses the truth that we are not in post-racial America – yet.
By continuing to do business as usual, Republican hurt their party and our nation.
They need to wake up that our country is in trouble, that the conservative agenda that is supposed to define their party is the answer, but that they will never sell it by continuing with political games.
First, some Republicans feel that what Reid said was racist. And sincerely have a problem with what he said. Some liberal blacks do, too. Second, Republicans need work on their messaging, especially to minority communities, there can be no doubt. Like a black activist friend in Houston told me the “bootstrap talk” doesn’t work well. And yes, the black community needs the core conservative message and it should resonate considering their social values are in line with Republican values.
However, the black community like the Jewish community still hasn’t quite come to grips with the racist and anti-semitic nature of the Democrat party. Republicans can reach out and should reach out. They should concede nothing and go into every community and find common ground. The market also has to be ready for the message.
I have felt that after Barack Obama got elected, blacks would be able to “come out of the closet” and vote their values. The peer pressure and group think has been overwhelming to vote Democrat. A threshold has been crossed now. The first black man has been elected. Now, maybe, a new candidate can be looked at for what he stands for and not for what he or she, looks like. And until race hustlers like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and as it turns out, Harry Reid and Barack Obama, move along, the only message that blacks will hear will be of victimhood and misery.
There are rays of hope, however. School vouchers and the liberals loving embrace of teachers unions strike a chord with parents who desire an education for their children. The collapse of cities like Detroit are evidence of the decay and rot inherent in liberal philosophy. The expense and exclusivity of liberal cities like San Francisco demonstrate their hypocrisy.
Democrat voters need to get fed up with the product they’re buying before they’ll even consider buying something else. The consumer is king after all. Yes, I’m fed up with Republicans mismanaging their relationships with minorities. I also hold voters themselves responsible. Like one black man on Beck said, he votes for Democrats in primaries because only Democrats get elected in his district and he wants his vote to count.
I still say that libs need to pay for their political incorrectness. Turn the rules on them. It works. Over the last year, since the egregious treatment of Sarah Palin by the press, I’ve seen feminists wake up to the misogyny against conservative women. Much of that came from pointing out the rank hypocrisy. It is not okay for liberals to be sexist and racist to achieve political ends. It’s also not okay to make politically incorrect language seem like racist language.
And to the main point: Do American people feel more comfortable about light skinned blacks? Really? I call b.s. The best character out of the latest Star Wars movies was Samuel L. Jackson. Everyone wanted more of him and he’s pretty dark. I personally feel way more comfortable with Clarence Thomas than Barack Obama. But see, it’s ideologically driven not whether I’d feel okay having a burger and fries or, heaven forbid, a beer summit with him.
Reid’s problem is that he thinks he’s better than the American people. He thinks the American people see through the racial lens like he does. Some do. In fact, many liberals do. No one is going to contend that race isn’t still an issue in modern America. What they will contend and rightly contend, is that leftist policies are not making the issue go away. Liberals still have too much to gain by calling “racist!” at ever slight. Conversely, conservatives always lose when the issue of race comes up. The left and the liberal press make sure of that.
Americans Are In For A Shock, ‘Eh?
Thursday, January 7th, 2010According to Obama administration officials and USA Today, Americans will be shocked when they see the results of some internal reports regarding the Crotchbomber:
WASHINGTON — White House national security adviser James Jones says Americans will feel “a certain shock” when they read an account being released Thursday of the missed clues that could have prevented the alleged Christmas Day bomber from ever boarding the plane.
President Obama “is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on,” Jones said in an interview Wednesday with USA TODAY.
Oh yes, because Americans have been horribly naive about threats we face while President Obama and his lackeys are informed and had just the right perspective on this “man-made disasters” thingy. No, I think it’s the administration who is shocked. Why wouldn’t they be? They campaigned on softening the stance against man-made disasters and their approach was anything but realistic. From A.J. Strata:
This dialing back on the sensitivity of our responses was openly discussed by John Brennan during the campaign (a Bush era reject from the intel community who couldn’t follow orders and thought he knew better than everyone else). He was slated to be the head of the CIA until the looney left torpedoed his nomination bid. But he is a central advisor to then candidate and now President Obama. We see again the White House vetted its people to the rigor of a White House dinner guest list.
Brennan is probably at the center of the latest National Intelligence Strategy – the guiding bible for the dot-connectors at DNI and the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC). A strategy replete with distractions that are supposed to be handled by other government organizations:
Recall, we are supposed to be monitoring threats and defending ourselves. … There is violent extremists (a.k.a terrorists), insurgents and transnational criminals – all good targets.
But then things get weird. We find challenges such as ‘global economic crisis‘, ‘failed states and ungoverned spaces‘, ‘climate change and energy competition‘, ‘rapid technology change’ and ‘Pandemic Disease (H1N1)‘.
There are no terrorists at the North Pole plotting as the ice melts and refreeze. While providing scientists with detailed polar images we snap automatically every day is not much of a drain on our resources, the fact someone is checking those images to make sure they are not accidentally revealing national secrets means they are not sifting data for possible real threats. Each meeting on H1N1 at DNI was a meeting not watching for threats.
But in Obama’s world, a warm day is more of a threat than a bomb that can halt travel, disrupt the world’s precarious economy and escalate a war.
The American people will be shocked? I don’t think so anymore. The American people so the President lounge his way through the attack so as not disrupt his Christmas vacation. They have heard the inane babblings of Janet Napolitano on behalf of the President. They suffer through the new, civil liberties killing TSA rules while terrorists will skate through due to political correctness.
Insisting that America doesn’t have enemies. Insisting that President Bush was evil and made things up to scare people. Insisting that Guantanamo created terrorists. All these foolish notions created the foundation of President Obama’s stance on man-made disasters. He can’t even say the word terrorism without sounding tremulous and weak. All that good vibe he accumulated could be lost! Oh no! The world loves Barack Obama! Heaven forbid they actually hear him utter a true word.
Americans aren’t shocked. They’re dismayed. They actually believed President Obama was smart enough to know what he was doing as Commander-In-Chief. It’s clear that he doesn’t. It’s not shocking. It’s just more than a little scary.
Americans knew we still fought an enemy. They figured the President knew that, too. They figured wrong.
