Creating A Nobler Society–Crafting Your World By Taking Your Money
February 8, 2009 / 1:24 pm • By Dr. Melissa ClouthierI call myself a conservative libertarian because I believe in the notion of “rational self-interest”. People doing what is best for themselves is better than being beholden to the leadership to do as they say. That is, ceding free will to someone else because they are smarter or better or even Al Gore is anathema to me.
Glenn Reynolds shares this You-Tube clip of Milton Friedman and it is so good, I thought I would share it here. He also has another clip of SNL’s San Fran Nan and Harry Reid gleefully discussing bi-partisanship. It’s worth a watch. Certainly, Congress people operate from their own self-interest, do they not? They just prefer that you don’t. Words cannot describe how contemptible I find this mess of people and the three Republican senators who are caving–Specter, Snowe and Collins.
The plain fact is this: before the election, there were commentors here who extolled Obama’s plans for trimming the government and making the world a better place. They talked fiscal responsibility. Where are they now? They are silent.
If they are fair-minded like this liberal, they are thinking these thoughts:
If only they might be humbled by their hypocrisy
They won’t, though.
Mark Steyn:
I’m with Tom Daschle: I understand why he had no desire to toss another six-figure sum into the great sucking maw of the federal treasury. Who knows better than a senator who’s voted for every tax increase to cross his desk that all this dough is entirely wasted? Tom and Tim Geithner and Charlie Rangel and all the rest are right: They can do more good with the money than the United States government can. I only wish they followed the logic of their behavior and recognized that what works for them would also work for every other citizen. Instead, they insist that the sole solution to our woes is a record-setting, wasteful government-spending spree. This monstrosity of a bill, and the assumptions underlying it (e.g., “Politicians are wiser than non-politicians,” “Citizens don’t own what they earn,” etc.), are making me consider joining the Republican Party. Not because the Republicans are great, but because they’ve shown they can be decent. The Democrats are just ravening parasites.
I’ll write more tomorrow about freedom and economic freedom. This stimulus bill is a soul-killing financial strait-jacket that will impose the government’s will on you and me. I’d like one liberal to explain why it’s necessary besides giving Barack Obama an early “win” and a way to pay back his campaign supporters.

Testament to taxes: Earlier this year Amanda’s retirement fund with Healthsouth (a former employer) was transferred to another investment group, at that time we had the choice to just cash out the account. Since the account was worth a whopping $14.52, we decided to just cash it out. Today, while finishing my taxes I found out something that I knew would happen, that $14.52 (which rounds up to $15), cost me $14 in taxes! Between the penalties and taxes, that check was worth exactly 52 cents.
