"Lindsey Graham.. Boring. Boring. Boring"

Absolutely agree. I even told my parents today that if I ever have problem with insomnia all I need is a copy of his speech. How did this man get elected, funeral homes have employees with more energy, and some of the "residents" show more signs of life. Yikes.

"So I take it that tonight is boring night. ...I’m also thinking that it was a good thing that none of these guys were chosen for VP. Whew."

There really was a stark contrast between McCain's night and previous nights. There's no question about it. I guess they ran out of interesting people to give speeches. I have to think McCain tapping Palin for VP was divine providence.

"Maybe the strategy is to pick the most boring speakers so that McCain looks like a firebrand."

The first part of McCain's speech had me wishing I could fast forward through it. I too wish they showed Sarah Palin's video.

"She’ll be a great First Lady."

If McCain wins I could see Cindy being like an American Princess Di.

"“You will know their names. I will use my veto.” He better do this. Earmarks and pork have killed the Republican brand."

No kidding, I loved Reagan but his Amnesty bill was a disaster. And George Bush Sr. lost his 2nd term election because he broke his "read my lips" promise.

I liked the line about his transformation, and how his country saved him, and how he admitted that they broke him and how he didn't know how he could face his fellow inmates. That really humanized him and his explanation how he didn't lose his love for American but rather it grew stronger from all this pain and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life serving.. good stuff.

My respect for McCain has grown significantly from that speech, even tho it wasn't dynamic and exciting, it was moving and personal.

Phil,

I am voting for McCain, yes. However, he hardly represents what I'd like from my politicians. And I do lack confidence in his ability, although his performance lately is persuading me.

Obama is a charismatic, driven guy. I don't underestimate him.

Dr. Melissa, you seem to be expressing a lack of confidence in the candidate you've chosen to support when you assume that he will be the one getting shot down instead of being the one who is doing the shooting down. And, as I mentioned, the danger zone is for those entering his political space. Oh, and Maverick has supreme confidence in himself and gets the job done, so it doesn't really matter what others think, which would also seem to dovetail with John McCain's political approach.

Phil,

Thank you for laying that out. I get the choice on that level. I'm talking about the meta-message. Hopefully, all the listeners/watchers are as literal as you're taking it.

"Danger Zone"--Is he in it right now? Is he going to be shot down? Is he "out-gunned"?

If you'll recall the movie, Tom Cruise's character didn't inspire much confidence. Sure, he found himself finally, at the end. Is that what McCain hopes to do? So, I'm not feeling it as a good choice.

Now, thinking about hot, muscular men in uniform, nice. Imagining seamen playing vollyball without shirts, even better.

But the imagery that immediately came to my mind was being shot out of the sky. We want the Republicans to stay airborne here and also to win. And we don't want the second to die, either.

So, I didn't like the song. Still don't. But thank you for your breakdown. I hope the majority of America sees the music choice as inspirational as you do.

I read your "But before you say that...", so I'll be nice.

Tonight, they were playing music from Top Gun, Fall in to the Danger Zone. What the heck?

Here it goes:
Top Gun-Movie about Naval aviators
John McCain-Naval aviator
Main character in movie-Maverick
John McCain-Maverick
Top Gun-The best of the best
John McCain-The best for the job
Danger Zone-Vicinity of engagement
John McCain-Could be two things here: 1)He wound up in the danger zone and was a P.O.W. for 5+ years, or 2)Anybody who crosses his political path is in trouble and likely to be shot down if they demonstrate the poor judgement of trying to engage.

This seems to be a pretty clear matter, but maybe you are entitled to a little slack since you were so tired and bored.

Actually, I have to say, I was pretty impressed with McCain's speech. It wasn't the excellence of Palin's speech, but it was definitely rock-solid. My favorite part was where he admitted that his party screwed up when they were in power before. That took some courage (how many major party people do you hear that from?).

I don't agree on all of his issues, but then I'm an independent conservative. The Republicans pissed me off with their spending nonsense the last time around, and I was going to vote for Barr to spite them. I will be voting for McCain now because while he's not perfect (but then, who is?) he's the better person for the job. He's piling an awful lot on his plate with these promises though. He goes typical politician and it will hurt Republicans for a long time.

I would agree that Obama is a much better orator, but it is the debates that everyone will be watching, and he just doesn't do too hot with those. I see McCain handling those very solidly while Obama flounders a bit. Palin will clobber Biden (though he could get nasty in that debate). For some reason, I'm not too concerned with how this will turn out anymore. At least we've pushed back socialism for a few more years anyway.
