DNC Recap–UPDATED

August 29, 2008 / 9:00 am • By Dr. Melissa Clouthier

I think the pundits are blinded by the radiance. They need to step away from the light to see the whole picture.

Obama talked about being your brother’s keeper. Huh. Like he cares for his brother, I suppose. (A reader, Matt, reminded me of that.) But what it really sounds like taxpayers will pay, pay, pay.

Overall message: socialism and how will we pay?

Overall feel: like eating a bowl of Fruit Loops. Tastes good. Looks pretty. Hungry five minutes later.

Update:

Fascinating. You know how I had trouble articulating the emotion of the night and really, the whole DNC? I kept using the word “weird”. Something felt off, and I concluded that it was that it seemed over and sad, but I think there is more and Charles Krauthammer got to the heart of it, while I talked around it some. I’m getting this from Maggie’s Farm, where she asks “Can anyone say they know Obama?”

The psychiatrist Krauthammer notes, interestingly, that there is nobody to vouch for Obama. Shrinks are trained to notice things like that: how do people relate, and to whom. Where are the witnesses to his ability? Where are his friends and colleagues? Are there any left? A quote:

So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was Jeremiah Wright. But he’s out. Then there’s William Ayers, with whom he served on a board. He’s out. Where are the others?

The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger — a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair.

Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.

Yes, he does seem like the elegant mysterious stranger who arrived out of nowhere like the Music Man. Immature people without personal foundations fill in those blanks with their own hopes and dreams.

Yes. Where are his friends? Does he have any that he’d be willing for us to know? It very much strikes me that it’s Barack and Michelle against the world. And maybe, that’s the way it is, too. I mean, Bill and Hillary are that way. Do they have friends? Or is everyone an associate who is getting them on their way to their goals? We’ve all worked with people like that. They view people as either helpful or harmful to their personal aims. People are viewed through the filter of a want getting filled. Or maybe, it’s just that the Obamas have been schooled in such distrust because of their immersion in Marxist ideology and identity politics, thus making them insular.
